Navigation Tips

Navigation

Knowing where you are and where you are going on large waterways is a must. Today, most boats are equipped with GPS (global positioning systems) that make navigation easy. Easy, that is, if you know how to use it.

To ensure your safety, take a course on how to operate your GPS unit. You should also know the basic navigation signals used on the water ways – what they mean – what they stand for, etc.

Red and green buoys are some of the most basic navigation aids. These buoys mark the safe entrance to channels, marinas and other various entrances.

When you return from sea, always keep the red buoy on your right side and green on your left. Red – Right – Return is a great way to remember the rules associated with these simple navigating buoys.
